Although the outstanding thermal insulation
properties of vacuum have been recognized for hundreds of years, it is
only in the last 10 that techniques and materials have been developed to
enable reliable flat panels to be constructed in a cost effective way. RParts is delighted to
be able to offer
high-quality VIPs which hold a
consistently strong insulation value of R-28 per inch. Featuring
outstanding life and almost 6x the insulation value of conventional foam,
Rparts VIPs are the perfect alternative to ineffectual traditional foams
and high-priced aerogel panels.
Our panels are constructed using a DOW "Instill" foam core sealed at very
high vacuum in a special multi-layer gas impermeable barrier membrane
film.
How long do RParts VIPs last?
Using sophisticated accelerated-life testing, it
appears that the answer is 15-25 years depending on how they are installed
(use our suggestions for maximum life). Panel
life depends on many factors including the type of core material, quality
of barrier membrane film, quality of the construction process and level of
initial vacuum. RParts works with one of the world's leading VIP
manufacturers to ensure that our panels are always of the best quality
possible. Unlike many other VIP manufacturers, all RParts panels
include gas-absorbing "getters" to ensure outstanding insulation
performance for many, many years.
Why are RParts VIPs so much less expensive than others?
RParts has worked closely with the manufacturer
to optimize the performance, life and cost of our panels. Is it
possible to get VIPs with higher performance? Yes. However, these
panels are based on an expensive aerogel core material which put them
outside the reach of most users. Consequently, nearly all VIPs
produced today are based on the same Dow "Instill" cores as our panels.
RPart's streamlined ordering process and high volume allows us to sell the
highest quality custom Dow Instill panels on the market at unbeatable
prices.
How do I know that RParts VIPs are really R-28?
The unfortunate fact is that there are insulation manufacturers who make
some pretty outrageous claims. (We know of one company that uses the
same VIP materials as RParts but claims they are R-40 and sells them for
twice as much!) We don't play those games. Our panels have
been tested to ASTM C518 (scientific thermal standard) by Anter
Laboratories, one of the leading thermal test labs in the country.

for yourself.
How do I install them?
RParts VIPs are most often used when building a new box. However, it
is also possible to use them inside or outside an existing box to
dramatically improve insulation performance. It you plan to use them
inside, you will need to cover them with another rigid fiberglass or
similar liner for protection. For additional installation
instructions, see our panel installation
and ordering guide.
