Filter-Dryers, Strainers
& Sight Glasses
  Filter-dryers do exactly what the name implies.  They filter contaminates out of the refrigerant stream and and remove any residual moisture which may have been introduced during the installation and/or charging process.  They also act to neutralize acid which forms as a result of the interaction of moisture and oil.  While it has always been a good idea to use a high-quality filter-dryer, the recent change to new refrigerants and oils make it more important than ever.  Filter-dryers should be changed whenever the refrigerant circuit needs to be broken during service and annually on any system which uses rubber refrigerant hose.
 

Sealed Sporlan Filter-Dryers

Sporlan "Catch-All" brand filter-dryers have become the industry standard.  These units offer excellent moisture absorption and filtering capacity.  They desiccants are compatible with all common refrigerants including HFCs, CFCs and HCFCs.

Spun Copper Filter-Dryer

These economical spun filter-dryers are recommended for hermetically sealed systems up to 4,000 BTU/hr capacity.  They can be used with all common refrigerants and blends.  They feature extended ends for easy soldering and a surprisingly high moisture absorbing capacity (30 drops).

Capillary Tube Strainer

The most common problem in capillary tube system is clogging.  Even if the system is clean and properly assembled, small particles can come loose over time and block (or severely restrict) the tiny capillary passage.  The Capillary Tube Strainer (commonly called a "bullet strainer") screens out contaminates ensuring trouble-free operation for years.

Sight Glasses

Sight Glasses are used to determine the state of charge.  For optimum performance a cooling system must have a solid column of light at the expansion valve.  A sight glass provides a visual indicator of any "bubbles" in the refrigerant stream that could adversely effect performance.  In general, the sight glass should be located s near the expansion valve as possible.  RParts sight glasses also incorporate a visual moisture indicator which changes color if moisture is rises to an unacceptably high level.
