Sanden (Sankyo)

Sanden (also known as Sankyo and Sankyo/Sanden) is the most popular and commonly used swash plate type compressor.  Although Sanden makes hundreds of models, most are variations of the older "505" and "508" compressors, which feature different clutch sizes and port connections. If you are looking to replace an existing compressor, RPARTS can assist you in identifying interchangeable models. In addition, RPARTS can help reduce the complexities of switching from R-12 to R-134a.

You can start by using the descriptions and dimensional information provided on this page. If you are replacing an existing compressor, see our Sanden Selection & Conversion Guide.

Key features:

bullet Electromagnetic clutch included - two sizes available.
bullet All models are R-12- and R-134A-compatible.
bullet Small size/capacity ratio.
bullet 5, 7 and 8 cu. in displacement available.
bullet Available with integral 1/4" charge ports  ("R-12" models only)

Multi-Refrigerant Compatibility
All Sanden compressors are delivered with PAG (polyalkaline glycol) oil.  PAG oil is compatible with all common refrigerants including R-12 and R-134a.  No flushing is required.  The "R-12" and "R-134a" designation indicates the presence (R-12) or absence (R-134a) of integral 1/4" charging ports. It is not an indication of compressor compatibility.

Hose Connections & Access Valves
Old-style compressors -  Sanden is in the process of phasing out "R-12" style compressors.  The "R-12" designation indicates that the compressors have integral 1/4" flare charge ports and male "flare" type suction and discharge connections.  R-134a can be safely used in new "R-12" compressors.  RPARTS still carries these compressors but availability is limited.

Newer-style compressors -  Sanden refers to newer models as "R-134a" compressors.  As with the "R-12" models, this designation is not referencing refrigerant compatibility. It is describing the porting configuration.  R-134a models do not have charge ports (access valves) and use "O-ring" type suction and discharge connections for the hoses.

For detailed information on hose connections and access porting options - see our Connector & Porting Guide for Sanden.

Capacity
The chart below shows the capacity of an 8 cubic inch compressor using R-134a at a high-side pressure of 235 psig and a low-side (evaporator) pressure of 35 psig.

For a 5 cubic inch compressor,  multiply the power and capacity given below by .625.  For a 7 cubic inch compressor multiply by .875.

Conversions - Input power 1 kW = 1.34 Hp.  Capacity 1kW-h = 3,410 Btu/hr
